Curtains without drilling: choose the right setup

A renter’s comparison of tension rods, no-drill brackets and practical light-control choices for apartment windows.

Curtains change a room quickly, but the rod matters just as much as the fabric. Your best option depends on the window opening, the surface it presses against, and the weight of the curtain.

Inside-mount tension rods

Tension rods brace between two opposing surfaces. They may suit a recessed window opening where both sides are sound and the manufacturer’s minimum and maximum width fit the space.

Measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom; older window frames are not always perfectly square. Check the rod’s load rating against the full curtain weight, and follow its end-cap and surface instructions. Paint can still mark under pressure.

Other no-drill options

Some systems use removable adhesive brackets, clips or a freestanding frame. These should be chosen by product-specific weight and surface instructions, rather than assuming all “renter-friendly” systems are interchangeable.

Do not attach a rod or bracket where it could obstruct a window’s operation or an emergency exit. If your window design has a safety requirement, keep it accessible.

Pick curtains for the problem you have

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends window coverings as one measure renters can use to block direct sunlight in summer and help retain warmth in winter. The actual benefit depends on the window, climate, fabric and use.

  • Glare during daytime: an easy-to-open light-filtering layer may work better than permanent blackout.
  • Early morning light: compare lined or blackout curtains, and measure beyond the window edges if your mounting arrangement allows.
  • Privacy without a dark room: consider sheer panels plus a second layer.
  • Seasonal heat: properly used shades, blinds or curtains can help manage sunlight and thermal comfort.

Do a five-minute fit check

  • Measure the clear opening and the available wall or recess space.
  • Weigh your curtains or check their stated weight before selecting a rod.
  • Confirm the mounting product is approved for your specific surface.
  • Open and close the window and curtains after installation to check for rubbing or interference.
  • Keep blind and shade cords out of children’s reach; cordless options avoid dangling operating cords.
